Chapter 5 - Halloween Night
"Wingardium Leviosa!" Jun enchanted as he "swish and flick" his wand. But no matter how many times he tried, he couldn't get his feather to move an inch.
He slammed his wand down hard on the table and grunted in frustration.
"Do you best," Ohno mumbled, not looking up from his new UtaMahou textbook.
"Aren't you gonna help me a little bit?" Jun asked, slightly annoyed.
"Hey, I have to study this for next week's test!" Ohno protested. "UtaMahou isn't exactly an overnight success, you know. It takes a lot of skill!"
It's been nearly two months since Ohno made it into UtaMahou. So far, Ohno hasn't been able to produce any magical voice. Jun insisted that Ohno would teach him in secret so that Jun can learn a little bit of UtaMahou, but nothing interesting happened as far as Ohno says.
The cold weather settled in quickly, and Halloween was around the corner. Today, Ohno and Jun decided to study inside the library since it was the warmest place inside the castle besides the crowded common room.
Jun was having a hard time in Charms while Ohno aced the class since Charms and UtaMahou goes hand-and-hand together. Jun also spent a lot of time with Aiba, and wherever Aiba went, Sho was there as well. Ohno tags along but always disappear often to his UtaMahou lessons.
"I don't get why you have to study so hard if you haven't even sang any magic voice," Jun said, but Ohno was still lost within his textbook. "Hey, Ohno! You there?"
"It's like you're in your own world," Jun mumbled.
"Huh? You say something?" Ohno finally looked up.
"That's Ohno for you." Aiba said from behind Jun.
"Why do you study so hard for UtaMahou and not Potions?" Sho asked, as he and Aiba sat with Jun and Ohno. "After what happened last Potions class, you think you learned a thing or two after Naruse deduct 120 points from Gryffindor in a single lesson."
"That's gotta be a new record, ne?" Aiba laughed, but Ohno just pouted and returned to his textbook.
"Hey, Sho. Can you help me with this spell?" Jun asked, pointing at the feather.
"Are you serious?" Sho said. "You can't perform a simple levitation charm?" Sho laughed at Jun's face again.
"Will you help me or not?" Jun grunted, annoyed with Sho teasing him.
"Okay, okay," Sho wiped a tear from laughing too hard. "Watch how I do it."
Sho always got on Jun's nerves but as much as he hates it, Jun looks up to him. Sho was taller than Jun, and it made him seem like an older brother to Jun. Sho was reliable...irritating but reliable.
"Ah!" Ohno jumped, staring at his wristwatch. "I'm gonna be late!" And he quickly gathered his things into his bag.
"You're leaving again?" Aiba looked up, as they watched Ohno in such haste.
"I'm sorry guys. I'll see you tomorrow." And he dashed out the library.
"I don't think UtaMahou meets that often for classes," Aiba mumbled.
"Dummy," Sho said. "The class was meant for second years who already have the knowledge of Charms from their previous year. Ohno has to work extra hard to catch up."
"Oh, when you put it that way, I feel sorry for him," Aiba nodded.
"Think of it this way," Jun spoke, "when we take UtaMahou, Ohno can help us since he already took a year of it."
"That's true," Aiba said and went back into writing his essay for Potions.
"Okay. Let's try that levitation charm again," Sho said, rubbing his hands together.
"Alright..." Jun nodded, glaring down at the cursed feather that won't move. "Wingardium Leviosa!"
Jun flicked his wand so hard that Sho's stack of textbooks soared across the table and knocked Aiba off his chair. Sho and Jun immediately run to Aiba's side.
"I'm so sorry! Are you okay?" Jun asked as Aiba slowly sat up and smirked.
"At least you're progressing, Matsujun," Aiba laughed. Sho and Jun sighed with relief.
"My name is Matsumoto. How many times do I have to tell you?" Jun mumbled as he helped collecting Sho's books. He picked up a few books without much thought until his eyes landed on a certain title. It was a thick and old book with golden letters.
"Legends of the Vocal Wizards?" Jun read out loud. Sho quickly snatched the book off his hands. "Why are you reading that?"
"I was curious," Sho said, looking a little red. "I mean...since Ohno is in UtaMahou...it's just...I wondered...so I-"
"Calm down, Sho," Aiba said, as they sat back on their table. "You're researching about the legend?"
"Aren't you curious, Aiba?" Sho asked, looking excited. "I mean, it's kinda interesting. The origin of magical voice."
"What?" Jun said, obviously lost.
"Oh, that's right." Sho nodded. "You didn't grew up in the wizarding world."
"Gee, sorry I'm Muggle-born," Jun rolled his eyes.
Sho made an apologetic look. "The Legend of the Vocal Wizards are based around the first five Vocalists. They were the first to bring incantations to magic, thus the power of magical voice," Sho explained.
"You mean even simple spells like 'wingardium leviosa' is a voice magic?" Jun asked, as if it was class lesson.
"Sure," Sho nodded. "Any vocal incantation has a certain amount of magic carried through your voice. Advance wizards sometimes perform incantations through their mind, but the magic is still there as vocal magic."
"I didn't know that," Jun mumbled, rubbing his chin. "I always thought the wand holds the magic..."
The Ravenclaw boy shook his head. "It wasn't always. Since the Five Vocalists were the first to produce voice magic, they mastered it first. They were so powerful, they were like gods both in the wizarding world and the muggle world.
"In a good way?" Jun dared to ask.
Sho stared at Jun with a serious gaze."They abused their magic. Back then, it was too advance for most wizards, since all they could do at the time was perform magic through magical objects like orbs, staffs, or swords. The Vocalists learned to use just their voice for magic. They were feared back then.
"Until one day, a stranger shrouded in black challenged the Five Vocal Wizards....and they lost."
"How?" Jun gasped, watching Sho intently like a child listening to a good story. Sho just shrugged.
"I don't know how, but the stranger sealed their Voice within five different talismans corresponding to the Five Vocal Wizards as water, fire, wind, earth, and metal. And he hidden them from the Vocal Wizards so they could never gain their power again."
"Were they ever found?"
"No. They were never found, and a good thing too. Because they say that the talismans hold so much power, it'll make any man or wizard go insane. The Vocal Wizards died powerless, but the last one to survived made a prophecy."
" 'And they will come once again.' " Aiba spoke.
" 'Through truth and one love. Through blood and soul.' " Sho added.
" 'They will take this world by storm.' "Jun finished, remembering what Headless Nick said before.
Jun felt a chill down his spine as if there was far more meaning to the prophecy then let on.
"It sounds like an omen," Jun said, eyeing Sho's textbook. "Like they'll come back and take over the world or something."
"That's what I thought too," Sho said as he opened the book and flipped through the pages. "So I decided to do some research about them. I mean, they improved the magical world after all." He pointing at one picture. "History has forgotten their name, but they were known by their color."
"Blue, red, green, yellow, and purple," Jun mumbled.
The picture was a group of five faceless men in colored shadows. Underneath the picture, a wheel diagram also showed their colors with their elements: water, fire, wind, earth, and metal. The three boys gazed down at the picture, lost in their own thoughts...

It was finally Halloween, and the castle was decorated for the holiday. Black and orange streamers were found everywhere, and occasionally a few students would pull pranks on each other.
Jun headed for dinner alone since Ohno still wasn't back from his lessons. Jun noticed that he barely hang out with Ohno ever since he joined UtaMahou. The most suspicious thing was that Jun knew that classes shouldn't meet this much even if Ohno is one year behind.
'What is Ohno really doing?' Jun thought as he entered the Great Hall.
The feast was magnificent as always and with pumpkin lanterns for decoration hovering over the Great Hall. Jun ate and laughed with his fellow Gryffindor friends, and he looked over at the other houses.
Sho and Inoue Mao chatted with each other, but it looked like Sho did most of the talking. Then, Mao looked over at Jun as they held each other's gaze for a few seconds before she looked away, blushing. Then, Ikuta Toma came to join them as well.
Over at the Hufflepuff's table, Aiba was the center of attention as everyone around him laughed. At the Slytherin's table, Erika sat close to Yamashita, but his eyes stray over to the Hufflepuff table until Jun realized he was staring at Horikita Maki.
Then, Jun realized that Nino wasn't anywhere to be found.
"How odd..." Jun mumbled to himself without much thought. Then he heard a few voices down a couple of seats from him.
"Are you okay, Nishikido?" Someone asked. Jun looked over and say Nishikido looking extremely pale.
"What happened to you?" Kimura asked.
"I don't know," Nishikido said. "One minute, I was walking along the corridors, then I heard these voices."
Jun felt his heart skip a beat.
"And I suddenly couldn't move...like I lost control of my body," Nishikido shook his head. "I managed to run away, but it was difficult."
"That sounds almost like UtaMahou," Kimura mumbled.
Dinner was finally over and dessert came next, but Jun decided to leave early without the sweets and head back towards the common room. He walked down the third floor corridors when he heard a few voices.
"You almost had it. Try the scales again."
"Ohno?" Jun whispered, tiptoeing around the corner and peeked.
He saw Ohno...and Nino?!
"Hold on," Nino gasped, bent over with his hands resting on his knees. "Let me catch my breath."
"Come on. It's not that hard," Ohno said, rubbing Nino's back. Jun's eyes widen at the sight.
"Easy for you to say," Nino said, smiling truthfully. "You're a natural Vocalist."
"Nah," Ohno pouted, as he friendly shoved Nino. "Okay, let's go one more time. And from the chest like I said before," Ohno instructed.
Jun knew what was happening, and he was within hearing range!
"Ohno!" Jun yelled, appearing from his hiding spot. Ohno spun around; his eyes were wide with shock.
"Jun!" Ohno gasped.
"You're teaching Ninomiya UtaMahou?!" Jun yelled, glaring at Nino who glared back.
"Jun, I can explain-"
"So what if he is?" Nino back talked. "It's not like anyone will notice."
"What's in it for you to learn UtaMahou, anyway?" Jun questioned back, almost nose to nose with Nino. "Ohno has permission to take the class, so why must you learn it?"
"It's none of your business, mudblood!" Nino yelled back, and Jun saw him pull out his wand, but Jun was faster.
"NO!" Ohno shouted.
It was like the world was shaking. Nino and Jun both lost their balance, but Ohno remain standing with his mouth locked open. Wind started circling around him and grew bigger. His voice was like an echo ringing down the hall. Few pieces of dust and stones few from the ceiling.
Jun had his ears covered, trying to block out the tremendously loud noise that surely the entire school can hear. He managed to squint his eyes through the raging wind and saw Ohno grasping his throat, trying to stop himself.
"SATOSHI!!" Nino roared through the winds. "You have to close your mouth!"
But it was too late. The winds died down, and Ohno stood there swaying back and forth until he finally collapsed and out of breath.
"Ohno!" Jun raced to his side with Nino right behind him.
Ohno was unconscious.
